Exploring Dallas CB Templates 2010-2011

I was pretty confused by the end of my last blog post. By the standards I had been using no Cornerback was draftable.

I’m also in a bind because I believe player templates changed when the Jason Garrett became head coach. None the less, using the leaked 2010 draft board, I think we can make our version of the Dallas Cowboys player templates. Until there is another leak, I can’t update too much.

I went through and found every CB listed on the 2010 draft board, as shown here: http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2010/4/27/1446595/consolidated-cowboys-draft-board

I then found the worst performer in every category and project that value as the bare minimum measurable to be draftable by the Dallas Cowboys.

  • Height weight 40 Bench Vert. Broad 20yard 3cone
  • Haden, Joe [CB] (1,7)
  • 71    193        4.52    18    35    125    4.34    6.94

  • Lewis, Myron [CB] (3,67)

  • Wall, Jamar [CB] (6,196)
  • 70    204        *4.52    15    ”"    ”"    ”"    ”"
  • Verner, Alterraun [CB] (4,104)
  • 70    189        4.52    11    32    116    4.12    6.7
  • Thomas, Kevin [CB] (3,94)
  • 73    192        4.41    19    34.5    126    4.18    6.82
  • Thurmond, Walter [CB] (4,111)
  • **** No Combine results

The Break Down:

  • Shortest player: 5’10
  • lightest player: 189
  • Slowest 40: 4.52, scored by 4 players
  • Fewest Reps: 10, 2 players
  • Lowest Vert: 32″ Alterraun Verner lowest scorer in 4 categories
  • Shortest Broad Jump: 116, twice
  • Slowest 20 yard: 4.34 Pro Bowler Joe Hayden
  • Worst 3Cone: 7.32, no other three cone is above 7

No other three cone is above 7 but we are using the worst performers to give form to our model of the 2010 Dallas Cowboys Corner Back Template.

The Worst Cornerback Dallas would appear to be willing to draft 2010 Edition:

5’10, 189 lbs, 4.52 40 time, 10 reps of 225lbs, Vertical 32inches, a broadjump of 9’8″, Short Shuttle of 4.34 (Ware ran a 4.07, in contrast), and a 3cone of 7.32

Verner Alterraun scores most of the lowest scores, in height, weight, 40 time, bench press, vert, and broad jump. He’s a starter in Tennessee

Here are other players who met that criteria that Dallas did not have on their draft board: There were none it turns out

There were 28 CBs listed at the Combine. (2 players were really safeties; 1 Cowboys player is not at the Combine)

Dallas had 12* on their Draft Board (Thurmond was not at combine, AOA as Cowboys Safety, Earl Thomas Safety).

Of those not included from the Combine

  • 3 were too short
  • then 5 weighed less than 189 lbs
  • then 3 were slower than 4.52
  • the last 2 only lifted 7 times, not the required 10

Therefore for 2010 my limited physical properties list – 5’10, 189 lbs, 4.52 40, 10 bench presses, vert of 32, 9’8″ broad jump, SS 4.34, 3cone 7.32 described every player on the draft board and every player not on the draft board.

It’s only slightly more than a coincidence.

Here is a link to my spreadsheet of the 2010 combine results:

Now let me make a list of Cornerbacks from the 2011 Combine who meet the criteria

  • 70, 189, 4.52, 10, 32, 96, 4.34, 7.32
  • 34 Cornerbacks at 2011 Combine
  • 2 too short (less than 70 inches)
  • 7 are too light (less than 189lbs)
  • 9 are too slow (not faster than 4.52)
  • everyone remaining can lift 225 lbs more than 10 times, excepting 2 dataless players I keep
  • everyone remaining beats 32″ vertical jump.
  • for every player that has data, they all exceed the thresholds of 20 yard shuttles, and 3cone times, as well as broad jump.
  • Overall 5 players were missing data.

Dallas would be left with 16 players, give or take with the 5 missing data. So, as few as 11, as many as 16 draftable CBs. So I’m conjecting that while in 2010 Dallas had 12 draftable CBs at the combine, in 2011 they had between 11-16 draftable CBs based on measurables.

I would like more data especially Draft Boards since 2010, to look for cornerbacks who fit the criteria but were not on Dallas’s draftboard.

This is the list of players I arrived at:

Dallas Cowboys 2011 Cornerback Draftable Players

  • Brandon Burton        Utah
  • Byron Maxwell        Clemson
  • Davon House        New Mexico State
  • Chimdi Chekwa        Ohio State
  • Brandon Harris        Miami
  • Cortez Allen        Citadel
  • Jalil Brown        Colorado
  • Jimmy Smith        Colorado
  • Chykie Brown        Texas
  • Curtis Marsh        Utah State
  • Patrick Peterson        Louisiana State
  • Prince Amukamara        Nebraska
  • Josh Thomas        Buffalo
  • Marcus Gilchrist        Clemson
  • Ras-I Dowling        Virginia
  • Brandon Hogan        West Virginia

I’m still exploring the Data, Nice time for a break here. So, I want to make a large, overarching critique of the GM in Dallas, but its going to take awhile to arrive at a salient point. My plan for the near term is to continue to document the Combine scores of the 2010 Draft, and use them as templates to derive the Cowboy’s board of draftable players, then apply it to 2011, 12, and 13. For the most part, due to scheme changes, many positions will be obsolete. Oh well that’s tomorrow’s problem
